چکیده

We study field theories with global dipole symmetries and gauge symmetries. The famous Lifshitz theory is an example of a symmetry. in detail its 1+1d version compact field. When this symmetry promoted to $U(1)$ symmetry, the corresponding tensor This known lead fractons. In order resolve various subtleties precise meaning these or symmetries, we place on lattice then take continuum limit. Interestingly, limit not unique. Different limits different theories, whose operators, defects, etc. are different. also consider $\mathbb Z_N$ group. Surprisingly, several physical observables, such as ground state degeneracy mobility defects depend sensitively number sites lattice. Our analysis forces us think carefully about that do act standard Hilbert space theory, but only presence defects. refer them time-like discuss detail. These allow phrase restrictions (including those fractons) consequence

Lifshitz Phase Gauge Symmetry Breaking and Application

When a gauge theory with gauge group G is broken by a dynamical condensate C that transforms nontrivially under G, with covariant derivative (DμC) , the leading derivative term (DμC) (DC)A in the effective action can have a coefficient α of general sign and magnitude. The case α > 0 corresponds to the usual Higgs phase, but the cases α = 0 and α < 0 correspond to new phases with novel propertie...

Misleading Coupling Unification and Lifshitz Type Gauge Theory

Grand unification is an attractive idea and enables the unification of forces and the (partial) unification of quarks and leptons in each family.1) The introduction of supersymmetry (SUSY) increases the reality of grand unification. In the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), the gauge couplings meet at MX = 2.1× 1016GeV if the superpartners and Higgs particles exist below or around O(...

Exotic tensor gauge theory and Duality

Gauge fields in exotic representations of the Lorentz group in D dimensions – i.e. ones which are tensors of mixed symmetry corresponding to Young tableaux with arbitrary numbers of rows and columns – naturally arise through massive string modes and in dualising gravity and other theories in higher dimensions. We generalise the formalism of differential forms to allow the discussion of arbitrar...

Enhanced Gauge Symmetry in M(atrix) Theory

We discuss the origin of enhanced gauge symmetry in ALE (and K3) compactification of M theory, either defined as the strong coupling limit of the type IIa superstring, or as defined by Banks et al. In the D-brane formalism, wrapped membranes are D0 branes with twisted string boundary conditions, and appear on the same footing with the Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gauge bosons. In M(atrix) th...

Form-field Gauge Symmetry in M–theory

We show how to cast an interacting system of M–branes into manifestly gaugeinvariant form using an arrangement of higher-dimensional Dirac surfaces. Classical M– theory has a cohomologically nontrivial and noncommutative set of gauge symmetries when written using a “doubled” formalism containing 3-form and 6-form gauge fields. We show how the arrangement of Dirac surfaces allows an integral sub...
